Bury Parish Church

Saint Mary the Virgin

Church Records

Looking for Family Records?

A Parish Church has existed for centuries on this site and thousands of baptisms, weddings and funerals have been held in the present and past church buildings.

Because records require lots of space and must be kept securely, in an environment that has controlled temperature, humidity and light levels it is no longer possible to store all our ancient records at the church. So all records prior to 1940 have been transferred to:

Manchester Archives

Central Library

St Peter’s Square

Manchester

M5 2PD

If you have enquiries about tracing records of baptisms, marriages and funerals in your family’s past you can write to them or use their website:

www.manchester.gov.uk/libraries/arls

From its home page you are able to access “Church Register List”, then “Parish Registers” and scroll down to “Bury. St Mary the Virgin”. You then see a list of all the records that they hold on our behalf. They also have an email enquiry form, under the “Contact Us” heading, so you can ask what services they offer for those too far away to visit Manchester.

If your enquiry relates to records after 1940, please apply in writing to The Rector, Bury Parish Church, Tithebarn Street, Bury, Lancs, BL9 0JR, or you can contact the Parish Office by email at bpc.office@virgin.net.

Good luck with your family history research.
