Candlemas & the Beginning of Our 150th Anniversary Year
Sunday 1 February 2026
For centuries, Christians have celebrated Candlemas as the moment Christ is revealed as the Light of the World. It marks the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and brings the Christmas season to its close with themes of light, dedication, and new beginnings.
This year, Candlemas has a special meaning for Bury Parish Church.
In 2026, we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the laying of the Foundation Stone of our present parish church building — a moment that shaped our town’s spiritual life for generations. For a century and a half, this place has held baptisms, marriages, songs of praise, and prayers carried through times of joy and sorrow.
As we step into this anniversary year, we invite everyone — long-standing members, friends, visitors, and the whole community — to join us in giving thanks for the faithfulness of God through these 150 years.
Festal Eucharist for Candlemas — 10.00am
Our celebration begins with a Festal Eucharist, a joyful and richly sung communion service marking Candlemas with ceremony, music, and thanksgiving.
This special service will be led by the Bishop of Manchester, who joins us to open our 150th Anniversary Year and to honour the heritage of worship in Bury Parish Church.
Bring-and-Share Lunch — Following the Morning Service
After worship, everyone is warmly invited to stay for a Bring-and-Share lunch.
This is a moment to gather as a church family and wider community, to share food and fellowship, and to give thanks for the generations who have shaped our parish life. Please bring something to add to the shared table if you can — but most of all, bring yourself.
Choral Evensong — 4.30pm
The day concludes with a beautiful service of Choral Evensong, giving space for reflection, stillness, and gratitude as we offer the day — and the year ahead — to God.
All are welcome. Come celebrate our history, our faith, and the light of Christ as we begin our 150th Anniversary together.
